I left college bouncing on air after loving every minute of the practical BTEC course in Performing Arts. It certainly set the scene in terms of building the foundations for developing myself as a performer. We covered theory and stage terminology but it wasn’t done to death. It was a really balanced learning experience and so much fun.
After college I sat looking through my UCAS book wondering where I was going next. At 17 I didn’t really understand the concept of Geography as I was a the bubble that was my teenage world. I just knew London was very far away and that was pretty much it! Looking back I actually admire how I chose my degree course; as I was oblivious of location I did what any logical teen would do and read the course descriptions, choosing the 5 I liked the best. I got offers from 4/5, Lancaster all I am saying is it’s your loss! (And you never returned my creative writing portfolio – bitter, me ha-ha!) I honesty though I am sad I lost years’ worth of work, but life goes on.
I then realised 3/4 universities were pretty much in London so I got cold feet about being so far from my tiny home town of Shaw in Oldham. This made me opt for Huddersfield, again no idea where this place was. I was excited to be going away to University to continue to study Theatre and Media. Going to Argos to get all my plates, pans etc, which was cool back then, seriously! It was when you could circle everything you wanted in the catalogue and I was one to use my creativity to cut everything out and make collages. I still to this day have 2 of my green plates and 1 bowl from that set, the rest are in plate and bowl heaven.
Then off I go to Huddersfield and after 30 minutes we are there. 30 minutes! I was in shock, how is my university this close to home? I was going to university to get away but not London far away, obviously. And here in Yorkshire my next chapter began.
